About the event

The IEEE LARS and SBR (Latin American Robotics Symposium / Brazilian Symposium of Robotics) aim at promoting a comprehensive scientific meeting in the area of Intelligent Robotics, bringing together researchers, undergraduate and graduate students of Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering, Computer Engineering and related fields. The event will include technical sessions of an oral presentation of full papers and technical lectures of recognized importance in the area. LARS/SBR will take place in Rio Grande, Ro Grande do Sul, Brazil from October 22 to 26, 2019. We are looking forward to seeing you in LARS/SBR 2019.

PAPER SUBMISSION INFO




Papers must be written in English and must not exceed 6 pages in standard IEEE format including title, abstract, all tables, figures, and references. Papers should present substantial new results in theoretical, empirical and applied research related to the topics of the conference. This year the reviewing process will be DOUBLE BLINDED, so authors must hide their names, contact information, acknowledgments and any other reference to where their research takes place. All papers must be registered and uploaded by using JEMS https://jems.sbc.org.br/

Payment: the payment of the registrations may be made through bank slip (boleto), credit card, account debit, commitment and billing through the SBC registration system, but payments by debit and bank will be closed on 10th October After this date you will be able to pay by credit card, commitment note and billing through the registration system. For those who cannot make the payment in one of the ways mentioned, they may pay in cash at the event.
Commitment and Invoice Registration: The participant must access the ECOS system and make the registration by selecting the payment method "commitment note" or "invoicing" and clicking pay, the system will provide the necessary information that must be included in the invoice, commitment or billing request.
Authors registration: For the accepted papers at least 1 (one) author must be registered and paid in the Professional category. Each professional registration includes two papers, more paper suffer surcharge of R$300 each. The conference dinner is included in the professional registration, however other categories or extra dinner needs to pay the amount of R$100 per person. This is subject to availability of tickets. Student authors can pay an extra charge to guarantee the publicaiton of the papers directly in the ECOS system (R$450 for graduate student and R$480 for undergraduate student), including also two papers and the dinner.
Cancellation Policy: Up to 23th September, a refund of 100% of the amount paid for the registration can be made. After this date there will be no refund of any amount paid. The policy applies to both unsubscribing and cancellation of any additional activity. To request cancellation, send an email to faturamento@sbc.org.br.

Towards Industry 4.0, Precision Agriculture.. and beyond

The significant progress we witness in sensors, actuators, materials, Internet of Things, perception and many other areas of Robotics and AI enable a radical redesign of production and distribution processes, in any economic sector, from Industry to Agriculture and Logistics. The more mature changes affecting industry are referred to as 'Digitization of the European Industry' at European level and 'Industry 4.0' in Italy and Germany. The same technologies can be applied to Agriculture leading to the concept of Precision Agriculture or ‘Agriculture 4.0’. A quite positive side effect of the recent advances is that the Circular Economy paradigm becomes economically sustainable allowing to cope with quite serious sustainability issues we are facing. We will describe and discuss the technological and practical issues and opportunities of the ongoing research and applications for Industry 4.0, Precision Agriculture and the Circular Economy and will explore and make some conjectures on what will come next. We will discuss how and why the issues related to the reproducibility of research results and methods for the objective evaluation of intelligent robots performances are of critical importance in the current context. The aim of this talk is to give a deep and hands-on understanding of the opportunities and challenges related to the radical transformation of product and service ecology made possible by the recent technological advancements in IOT, Machine and Deep Learning, Computer Vision and Object Recognition.


Omnidirectional Underwater Computer Vision Research and Applications at the University of Girona

For the last 20 years the University of Girona (UdG) has been developing methods and equipment for data acquisition and interaction in underwater environments. The resulting technology has been applied in a wide range of fields including marine biology, geology, archaeology and the positioning and navigation of autonomous systems. Among other developments, a recent focus has been given to the use of omnidirectional multicamera systems which allow for a very efficient use of the survey mission time due to the multiple observations of the structures being imaged. This talk will overview the research activities at the UdG with emphasis on the use of computer vision for 3D mapping and their applications.

Using prior knowledge and advice to accelerate reinforcement learning

Humans are very good at learning from their own experience and using the knowledge gained from solving past problems to efficiently solve new similar problems. How can we build artificial agents with such capabilities? In this talk, I focus on Reinforcement Learning (RL), a technique that has successfully been applied to build autonomous agents that solve challenging sequential decision-making problems by interacting with the environment. In RL, an agent explores the space of possible strategies to solve a task in a given environment, receives feedback on the outcome of the actions it takes and deduces a behavior policy from its observations over time. However, agents need a long time to learn a task in this setting. To speed up this procedure, I outline approaches that allow agents to leverage experience gained from solving previous RL tasks and from advice from other agents. Some applications will also be presented.


Robotic Swarms

Robotic Swarms are groups made up of a large number of simpler robots, which do not have many individual capabilities, but together can perform various types of tasks. One of the main challenges in this area is the development of mechanisms that are scalable according to the number of agents, so that groups with 50, 100 or 1000 robots can be effectively controlled and coordinated. Oftentimes inspired by its biological counterparts, robotic swarms normally rely on distributed and simple actions, which combined result in complex and emergent behaviors. In this talk, we will present some of the works that have been developed at the Laboratory of Computer Vision and Robotics (VeRLab) of the Department of Computer Science - Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais (UFMG) in the areas of navigation, segregation, localization and mapping with robotics swarms.
