One of the most important initiatives of the Office of the Education Director (2007-2009 term, Director Edson Cáceres) has been the creation of the electronic magazine SBC Horizontes.
Professor Mirella M. Moro had the idea of creating SBC Horizontes. At that time she had a Junior Post-Doctorate scholarship of the CNPq (National Council for Scientific and Technological Development) at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul. Now she is a professor at UFMG. The idea was inspired on magazines of the international societies IEEE and ACM, IEEE Potentials and , respectively. These magazines publish both technical scientific articles and papers about student life and career. Their scope comprise not only Computing but also Engineering and similar courses. The big difference lays on the fact that SBC Horizontes is specifically focused on the Computing career.
In the beginning of 2008, the project for SBC Horizontes was approved by SBC Executive Committee and Board of Directors. Professors José Palazzo M. de Oliveira, Luciano Paschoal Gaspary e Renata Galante, and the doctorate students Clarissa C. Marquesan, Deise Saccol and Marcia C. Cera (all from Informatics Institute of UFRGS) participated of the SBC Horizontes project, under Mirella’s coordination. After the approval of the project, Mirella invited professor Marta Mattoso (COPPE/UFRJ) to join the magazine group as editor-in-chief. Other SBC members were also invited to form the editorial team and the associate editors group.
At SBC Congress 2008, in July in the city of Belém do Pará, the electronic magazine SBC Horizontes was launched, at the same time of the opening of WEI (Workshop of Computing Education), an event coordinated by the Education Committee of SBC. After the official release, articles were received along the second semester of 2008, in order to be evaluated and included in the first edition of SBC Horizontes. The selected articles have been published on this edition.
